About the archive
The Quebec Public Interest Research group (QPIRG) at Concordia is a resource centre for student and community research and organizing. It includes a wide range of community activism and research, rooted in an explicit grassroots, anti-oppression organizing framework and prioritizing consensus-based decision-making. This is reflected QPIRG’s current working groups, our core projects and publications, and our resource library as well as our support for campus and community groups through co-sponsorships, endorsements, and discretionary funding.
This archive includes hundreds of posters made by activists for organizational activities, events, and programming. The purpose is to preserve these ephemeral symbols of grassroots resistance.
Arrangement notes
QPIRG Concordia (PQ) – Posters that were created by QPIRG Concordia for its core activities and programming. The posters are arranged into three series:
Working Groups (PW) – Posters that were created by QPIRG Concordia’s working groups.
Community(PC) – Posters that were created by other groups in the community.
Once the posters have been sorted into one of these three series, they are then arranged by year.
Using the digital archive
Each poster in our digital archive includes a record describing the content. Records include (among other things) the name of the group that created the poster, the title, the language, and the item number. The item number refers to the exact location of the physical poster in the QPIRG Concordia space so that staff members and volunteers are able to locate the original if requested. There are a number of different ways to find posters in our digital collection:
Search box
The search feature looks for keywords in the text of entire records.
Choose the series
The digitized posters have been categorized into the three series that are used in the physical archive with sub-categories applied for the year.
Browse the indexes
Our subject index was built from the list of subjects used by Alternative Libraries and adapted to fit the needs of the poster archive. These subjects are also being used as tags on our digitized posters. You can browse by group or by speaker as well.
Physical Archive
We have a large number of posters in our archives that have not been uploaded onto the website. Feel free to come into our office to look at them. You can see our list of holdings in the following spreadsheets (use Ctrl+F to search for specific words):
